Fall back, change smoke alarm and carbon dioxide detector batteries this weekend | E-News | West Virginia University

Those with Environmental Health and Safety encourage everyone to replace the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon dioxide detectors as we “fall back” for daylight saving time beginning at 2 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 3).

The following are some best practices for smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector maintenance:

• If your smoke or carbon dioxide detector chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the battery immediately.

• When replacing a battery, find the list of batteries — brand and model — on the back of the detector or in the manufacturer’s instruction guide. Detectors may not work properly if a different battery is used.
