Rescuers locate body of 25

May 15, 2023

A 25-year-old was found dead by rescuers after he jumped into the water on the Chain O’Lakes near a Lake Villa residence and drowned early Sunday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff's Marine Unit responded around 1:05 a.m. Sunday to the "Long Channel" located between Petite Lake and Spring Lake for a man who went underwater.

Members of the marine unit along with the Lake Villa Fire Protection District and surrounding fire departments searched the water for several hours, according to Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

Sheriff's deputies also used a drone in the search.

The deceased man, a 25-year-old from Kenosha, Wisconsin, was recovered from the water around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Covelli said a preliminary investigation shows the man was likely heavily intoxicated. Witnesses observed him drinking at a birthday party.

The man, after attending a party, returned to a residence in the 25100 block of West Forest Drive in unincorporated Lake Villa.

He jumped into the water from a pier with his clothes on, Covelli said.

The man was able to swim to shore and a relative helped him remove his wet clothing and took him to bed.

Covelli said the man left his bed a short time later and jumped into the water again without clothing and attempted to swim across the channel.

The man went underwater as he swam across the channel.

The Lake County Coroner's Office responded to the scene and an autopsy is being scheduled.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit.
